Mohamed Salah is expected to sign for Turkish club Trabzonspor on a free transfer after reaching a mutual agreement with Liverpool to terminate his contract one year before its scheduled expiry.
The Egyptian forward leaves Anfield after nine seasons, having scored 257 goals in 442 appearances. That record places him third on Liverpool’s list of all-time leading goalscorers.
Salah Closes a Historic Chapter at Liverpool
The 34-year-old brought his long spell on Merseyside to an early end despite signing new terms in April 2025. His final season proved difficult, with Salah losing his place in the starting lineup and becoming involved in a public dispute with former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.
Salah departs as one of the most decorated and productive players in the club’s history. During his nine years at Liverpool, he helped the team win seven major trophies and established himself among Anfield’s most influential forwards.
His future had been linked with Saudi Arabia for several years. A move there appeared increasingly likely after Salah gave a revealing interview following his omission from the team against Leeds last season.
Less than three years ago, Liverpool rejected an offer worth £150m from Saudi club Al Ittihad. This time, however, the forward is preparing for a new chapter in the Turkish Super Lig rather than a transfer to Saudi football.
Trabzonspor Offer Salah a New Challenge
Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish league last season and will compete in the Europa League playoffs. Salah’s arrival would give the club an experienced attacker with an extensive record in domestic and European competitions.
Financial terms are expected to have influenced his decision. Reports suggest Salah could earn around £17m per year in Turkey. That amount may be slightly below his Liverpool salary and considerably less than the figures Saudi clubs were believed to be offering.
The move also represents a change in sporting level for a player accustomed to competing alongside some of Europe’s leading footballers. Trabzonspor have a strong squad, but adapting to a different league, team and competitive environment could require time.
For the Turkish club, signing Salah without paying a transfer fee would represent a major acquisition before their European campaign. For the forward, the move provides an opportunity to remain in competitive football after the end of a highly successful period at Anfield.
