Liverpool defender Rhys Williams will officially leave the club this summer when his contract expires at the end of June.
The centre back spent more than 16 years with Liverpool after originally joining the academy as a nine year old.
Williams thanked Liverpool in emotional message
Following confirmation of his departure, Williams shared a farewell message on social media reflecting on his long journey with the club.
The defender said Liverpool allowed him to achieve dreams he once imagined as a child and described it as an honour to represent the team at senior level.
He also thanked teammates, coaching staff and supporters while calling Liverpool fans the best in the world.
Several current and former players reacted to the message, including Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi.
Klopp gave Williams his first team opportunity
Williams made his senior debut under former manager Jurgen Klopp during the 2020-21 season.
That campaign became especially important for the young defender because Liverpool suffered a major injury crisis in defence.
As a result, Williams featured in 19 matches across all competitions and helped the club secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification.
Despite limited first team opportunities afterwards, many supporters still remember his role during that difficult season.
Multiple loan spells followed
In recent years, Williams gained experience away from Anfield through several loan moves.
The defender spent time with Kidderminster Harriers, Swansea City, Blackpool, Aberdeen, Port Vale and Morecambe.
Those temporary transfers helped him continue his development while searching for regular playing time.
Liverpool wish defender success for future
Liverpool also released an official statement thanking Williams for his contribution to the club over the years.
The club wished the defender success in the next stage of his career as he prepares to become a free agent this summer.
At 25 years old, Williams is now expected to search for a permanent move where he can establish himself as a regular first team player.
