World Cup Opening Day Captured in Pictures

The men’s FIFA World Cup has officially begun, with a record 48 teams from around the world chasing football’s biggest prize.

For the first time, the tournament is being staged across three host countries, with the United States, Canada and Mexico sharing the event.

Day one brought a bright opening ceremony in Mexico City, followed by the first two matches of the tournament. From packed stands and music performances to red cards and comeback drama, the World Cup quickly gave fans plenty to talk about.

Mexico Welcomes the Biggest World Cup Yet

Attention was firmly on Mexico as the 2026 co-hosts opened the celebrations for the largest World Cup in history.

There was a clear sense of excitement across the country, with supporters filling the streets and even local pets getting involved in the mood around the tournament.

The event began with a colourful show at the Estadio Azteca, one of football’s most famous stadiums. It was also a historic occasion for Mexico, which became the first country to host the FIFA World Cup three times.

The opening ceremony mixed Mexican culture, history, music, dancing and football celebration. Inside the stadium, the stands were full of fans wearing national colours and showing strong support for the home team.

Supporters were also treated to several musical performances. Shakira performed her song “Dai dai”, an Italian phrase meaning “come on, come on”, alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy.

There was another big moment for Kpop Demon Hunters fans too, as EJAE performed with opera icon Andrea Bocelli. Together, they sang “DNA”, the official anthem of the 2026 World Cup.

Mexico Start With Victory After Red Card Drama

Once the ceremony ended, the focus turned to football. The opening match saw co-hosts Mexico face South Africa in front of more than 85,000 fans.

Mexico started strongly and took the lead inside the first ten minutes through striker Julian Quinones. But the goal was only part of a dramatic first game.

Three players were sent off, the first time in 20 years that a World Cup match had seen that many red cards. South Africa lost Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, while Mexico defender Cesar Montes was dismissed in stoppage time.

Despite the late drama, Mexico fans were able to celebrate at full time. Their team won 2:0 and collected three points in their opening Group A match.

Raul Jimenez sealed the win in the second half, scoring his first ever goal at a World Cup and giving the home crowd another reason to celebrate.

South Korea Fight Back Against Czechia

The second match of the day brought the other two Group A teams together, as South Korea faced Czechia.

Czechia took the lead, but South Korea responded well and turned the match around. Their 2:1 win completed an eventful first day and left Group A already full of early talking points.

With two matches played, a packed ceremony completed and supporters around the world now fully involved, the 2026 World Cup is under way.
