United States Clears Iranian Team For 2026 World Cup With Staff Limits

Rubio Confirms Athletes Face No Entry Barriers

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington holds no objections to the Iranian national team competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made clear that nothing from the American side has told Iran their squad cannot attend the tournament.

The main concern involves accompanying personnel rather than the players themselves. Some members of the delegation have connections to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the United States will not permit their entry. Rubio noted that such individuals cannot arrive under the pretense of being journalists or trainers. The IRGC carries the official label of a foreign terrorist organisation from Washington.

President Donald Trump speaking alongside Rubio added that the administration has no wish to affect the athletes in any way.

Iran Advances Full Tournament Preparations

All of Irans group stage matches are scheduled to take place in the United States which created uncertainty following the start of the United States Israeli conflict with Iran on February 28. Despite this the Iranian government has confirmed that all required arrangements for the teams participation have been secured by the Ministry of Sports and Youth.

Iranian football federation president Mehdi Taj said at a gathering in Tehran that the federation is actively preparing for the World Cup while staying in line with decisions from the authorities. Some earlier speculation suggested Italy might replace Iran after failing to qualify yet the Iranian side continues to move forward with plans as normal.

The tournament begins on June 11 across the United States Mexico and Canada.
