Manchester United are preparing to complete the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after identifying a £35million release clause in the Belgian midfielder’s contract.
Tielemans remains tied to Villa until June 2028, and the club had no plans to sell one of Unai Emery’s most important players. New contract proposals were presented several months ago, but the existence of the clause has left Villa with limited control over his future.
United have moved quickly after discovering that the 29 year old can be signed for a fee well below the expected market price. Other clubs have also shown interest, although Tielemans is understood to prefer a move to Old Trafford.
Talks are continuing between United, Villa and the player’s representatives as all sides work to complete the transfer. The move was not widely expected at the beginning of the summer, but it would give United additional experience and technical quality in an area that has become a major priority.
United switch attention after Ederson deal stalls
Manchester United’s pursuit of Tielemans follows their decision to step away from a proposed deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, at least for the moment.
United reached an agreement with Atalanta last month worth €40.5million, around £35million, with a further €4.5million available through performance related bonuses. Personal terms had also been settled with the Brazil international.
The club carried out an initial stage of medical examinations before Ederson received a late call to join Brazil’s World Cup squad. That interruption delayed the remaining checks and prevented the transfer from being completed before the tournament.
United continued working on other midfield targets while waiting for Ederson to return. That preparation allowed them to react quickly when the second round of medical tests was carried out following the World Cup.
The exact reason for the change in direction has not been confirmed, but United are no longer expected to complete the Ederson deal immediately. A return later in the transfer window has not been ruled out, although it is uncertain whether Atalanta or the player would still be willing to reopen discussions.
The club’s search for midfield reinforcements extends beyond Tielemans. United have already signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and remain open to further additions as Michael Carrick reshapes the centre of his team.
Tielemans favours an Old Trafford transfer
Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in the summer of 2023. He has since established himself as a central figure under Emery and still has two years remaining on his current agreement.
Villa had hoped to build their midfield around Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana. That plan has already been affected by the serious injury suffered by Onana during Belgium’s World Cup victory over the United States.
The midfielder tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to spend a long period away from the pitch. His absence makes the possible loss of Tielemans even more difficult for Villa to manage.
The club is also finalising the signing of Switzerland international Johan Manzambi, who will provide Emery with another option in midfield. However, his expected arrival was not originally intended to prepare for Tielemans’ departure.
Villa have no desire to lose the Belgian, but they cannot prevent another club from activating the release clause. United have recognised that the fixed price represents a rare opportunity to sign a proven Premier League player without entering a long negotiation over his valuation.
Tielemans is understood to be open to the transfer and currently prefers Manchester United despite receiving interest from other teams.
Belgium injury ended Tielemans’ World Cup campaign early
Tielemans played an important role for Belgium during their run to the World Cup quarterfinals and captained the national team during the tournament.
He scored twice in Belgium’s dramatic 3 to 2 victory over Senegal in the round of 32, helping his country recover from a difficult position and progress to the next stage.
His tournament ended in frustrating circumstances before the quarterfinal defeat against Spain. Tielemans was expected to feature in the match but suffered an injury during the warm up and was forced to withdraw before kickoff.
United will assess his condition as part of the transfer process, although the injury is not currently expected to prevent the deal from progressing.
His international experience is one of the main qualities that appeals to United. Tielemans has played at major tournaments, captained his country and spent most of his club career competing at a high level.
United rebuild midfield after Casemiro departure
Manchester United’s focus on midfield has increased following the departure of Casemiro and the injury suffered by Manuel Ugarte.
Ugarte damaged knee ligaments during Uruguay’s World Cup group stage defeat against Spain. His absence has reduced Carrick’s available options and increased the need to add players capable of contributing immediately.
United have already recruited Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth £48million, with a further £2million available in bonuses. The Brazilian is expected to become an important part of the club’s long term midfield plans.
The club also explored a move for England international Elliot Anderson. However, Anderson chose to join Manchester City in a transfer worth £116million.
Mateus Fernandes was another player considered by United during their search. Tottenham Hotspur eventually met West Ham United’s £85million valuation and moved ahead in the race for his signature.
Those deals highlight the rising cost of midfielders in the Premier League. Against that background, Tielemans’ £35million clause appears particularly attractive.
United would be signing a player with extensive English football experience for less than half the amount paid for several other midfield targets this summer.
Premier League experience remains a United priority
Tielemans is older than many of the players United have considered during the current rebuild. At 29, he does not fit the profile of a young midfielder who can be developed over several seasons.
However, the club’s transfer strategy over the past two summers has regularly focused on players who already understand the Premier League. United’s decision makers believe proven experience can reduce the adjustment period and help new signings contribute more quickly.
Tielemans has completed eight largely successful seasons in the English top division. He first arrived at Leicester on loan from Monaco in January 2019 before joining the club permanently later that year.
His most memorable moment for Leicester came in the 2021 FA Cup final, when he scored the winning goal against Chelsea with a powerful long range strike.
He later moved to Villa and became one of the most reliable midfielders in Emery’s squad. His ability to perform in different roles has made him valuable both in possession and without the ball.
United believe the release clause offers an opportunity to secure an established Premier League player at a reduced fee.
Tielemans could ease the burden on Bruno Fernandes
One of Tielemans’ main strengths is his progressive passing. He is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, playing through defensive lines and moving possession from deeper areas into the final third.
United have often relied heavily on Bruno Fernandes to provide creativity and advance the ball. When opponents restrict the Portuguese midfielder, the team can struggle to connect midfield with attack.
Tielemans would give Carrick another player capable of controlling possession and creating forward momentum. He can switch play, find teammates between the lines and deliver accurate passes over longer distances.
His presence could allow Fernandes to operate closer to goal instead of repeatedly dropping deep to begin attacks. It would also give United more flexibility when building from the back against teams that press aggressively.
Tielemans is not only useful with the ball. He has developed into a disciplined midfielder who can compete in duels, cover space and help protect the defence.
Those qualities are particularly important following Casemiro’s exit. United need a midfielder who can contribute defensively without reducing the team’s ability to progress the ball.
Tielemans is not a direct replacement for Casemiro in terms of style, but he offers enough physical strength, tactical awareness and work rate to help fill part of the gap.
A cut price opportunity United do not want to miss
The transfer has developed quickly because United view the clause as an opportunity that may not remain available for long.
Villa would prefer to keep Tielemans and had already attempted to extend his contract. However, once the clause is activated, the final decision rests largely with the player.
United still have details to resolve before the move can be completed, but discussions are advancing and Tielemans’ preference for Old Trafford has strengthened their position.
The deal would give Carrick an experienced international midfielder who understands the Premier League and can contribute in several phases of play.
It would also represent a more affordable alternative to some of the other players United have considered this summer.
For Villa, losing Tielemans would disrupt Emery’s midfield plans at a time when Onana is already facing a long recovery. For United, the same situation offers a chance to add proven quality for £35million.
