Stony Brook University’s soccer team has had a season to remember, making significant waves in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Their impressive performance has not only elevated the team’s status but also brought individual accolades to several players and their esteemed coach.
Seawolves’ Standout Achievements: All-CAA Honors and Beyond
The Seawolves’ remarkable season saw five of its players receiving All-CAA honors, a testament to their skill, dedication, and hard work. The list of honorees is as follows:
All-CAA Second Team:
- Jonas Bickus;
- Bas Beckhoven.
All-CAA Third Team:
- Olsen Aluc;
- Edmond Kaiser.
CAA All-Rookie Team: Alex Fleury.
Ryan Anatol, the mastermind behind the team’s success, was rightfully named the CAA Coach of the Year. This accolade highlights his exceptional leadership and the significant improvement he has brought to the team.
The Seawolves’ Journey to Excellence
Defying all odds, the Seawolves, expertly steered by Coach Anatol, shattered preseason predictions of an 11th place finish by clinching an impressive third in the CAA. Their sophomore year in the league was nothing short of remarkable, as they sailed through their first six conference games without a single loss, catapulting them to the league’s pinnacle just in time for the home stretch.
The Seawolves enjoyed a nine-match unbeaten streak during the year. This was the longest streak during Anatol’s tenure and a record in the program’s Division I history. In fact, it was the best streak since the 1970 season.
By the end of the regular season, Stony Brook boasted remarkable offensive statistics:
- 22nd-best scoring offense in the NCAA
- 18th in total goals (32)
- 18th in assists (35)
- 20th in total points (99)
With this recognition, Anatol becomes the first Seawolves’ coach to win a CAA Major Award. He joins the ranks of Scott Dean and John Ramsey as the third coach in the program’s history to be named Coach of the Year.
Individual Brilliance: The Seawolves’ Honorees
The Lithuanian sensation, Jonas Bickus from Klaipeda, has clinched all-conference honors for the third straight year – talk about consistency! He’s outdone himself this season, smashing his previous records with a whopping 8 goals and a total of 17 points. His standout performances in various matches have really caught everyone’s attention.
Team captain Bas Beckhoven was a defensive stalwart, playing almost every minute of the regular season. His contributions were not just limited to defense; he also added assists and scored a memorable goal on senior night.
Olsen Aluc had a breakout year, playing in 15 of the 16 matches, scoring six goals, and adding four assists. His consistent performance and multi-point games were instrumental in the team’s success.
Edmond Kaiser, the German goalkeeper, was a formidable presence in goal. His stats speak for themselves:
- Led the CAA in saves per game (5.43) and total saves (76)
- Ranked top-20 in the nation in three different categories
- Finished the regular season with a 5-4-5 record and four shutouts
Freshman Alex Fleury made an immediate impact, finishing the season with six points. His performance included a goal in the team’s 4-0 victory over Elon and crucial assists in other matches.
Looking Ahead: The CAA Postseason
The Seawolves are all set for their first dance in the CAA playoffs, wrapping up league play with a solid 4-1-3 record. This impressive run snagged them the third seed for the 2023 CAA Championship.
