Kane Defends Bayern Back Line After 5-4 Loss
Harry Kane praised the defending after Bayern Munich’s 5-4 Champions League semi-final first-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, despite the match producing nine goals.
The Bayern striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in Paris. After full-time, he said there had been “amazing defending” during the game.
Kane argued that both teams had elite attackers and defenders on the pitch. He also said centre-backs had to cover midfield areas, wide spaces and dangerous one-on-one situations.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany also backed that view. He questioned criticism of the defending and said some of the work without the ball had been good.
Rooney Disagrees With Kane’s Verdict
Wayne Rooney strongly disagreed with Kane’s assessment. He said both teams defended badly and suggested Kane may have been protecting his team-mates before the second leg.
Rooney said the attacking talent was clear, but both sides looked too open. He also pointed to a lack of communication among modern defenders.
The former England captain said Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher used to organise defenders loudly during matches. Rooney believes that kind of instruction is now seen less often.
He also felt PSG should have protected their 5-2 lead better. Instead, Luis Enrique’s side kept attacking, while Bayern’s aggressive style helped create more chaos.
Carragher and Henry Praise the Attacking Quality
Jamie Carragher took a different view from Rooney. He said that in many high-scoring games, poor defending is the obvious reason, but this match felt different.
Carragher felt the goals came from outstanding attacking play rather than basic errors. He said almost every forward player on the pitch performed at an eight or nine out of 10 level.
Thierry Henry also focused on the risk both teams took. He said many people complain that football has become too cautious, but this game offered the opposite.
PSG have now scored 43 Champions League goals this season, while Bayern have 42. Their first-leg meeting became the first European semi-final where both teams scored at least four goals.
Luis Enrique Gives Honest PSG Reaction
Luis Enrique admitted PSG were happy to win but frustrated by the final scoreline after leading 5-2.
The PSG boss said his team deserved to win, draw and even lose at different stages of the game. His comments reflected how open and unpredictable the match became.
The tie now moves to Munich with PSG holding only a one-goal lead. After 90 minutes packed with goals, risks and debate, the second leg remains fully open.
