Gary Neville believes Arsenal’s biggest challenge before next Sunday’s showdown with Manchester City is not just tactical or physical, but emotional.
After Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth and City’s 3-0 win over Chelsea, the gap at the top of the Premier League has been cut to six points. That sets up a huge meeting at the Etihad, one that could go a long way toward deciding the title race.
Neville says Arsenal must stay balanced
Neville argues that Arsenal cannot afford to become consumed by the pressure of the moment.
In his view, the Gunners still need the passion and intensity required to win such a massive game, but they must avoid tipping into desperation. He feels that part of Arsenal’s problem against Bournemouth was not a lack of desire, but the fact they wanted it too much and became emotionally drained.
The Sporting match could actually help Arsenal
While Manchester City will have a full week to prepare, Arsenal must first play Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.
Neville believes that may actually be useful for Mikel Arteta’s side. Rather than spending all week dwelling on the trip to City, Arsenal can focus on another big game, try to build confidence and perhaps carry momentum into Sunday if they reach the semi finals.
He says this is what a real title race should feel like
Neville made the point that no team should expect to be handed a first title easily, especially not against a Manchester City side managed by Pep Guardiola.
For him, Arsenal have to accept that this is how a title race is supposed to look. It is meant to be difficult, tense and full of setbacks. The key now is whether they can clear their minds and treat the challenge as part of the journey rather than as a collapse waiting to happen.
Arsenal need a statement win
Neville believes Arsenal have reached the point where they need to produce a result that changes the whole feeling around them.
In his eyes, this team has spent years climbing toward this level, and now it needs a victory at a place like the Etihad to truly prove it can become champions. It does not have to be stylish, he says, but Arsenal must believe they can go there, suffer if necessary and still find a way to win.
City have the experience, Arsenal need belief
Neville also highlighted the contrast between the two sides. City have players and a manager who have lived through title run ins many times before, while Arsenal are still chasing that breakthrough moment.
That makes mindset crucial. Arsenal, in his opinion, must resist the outside noise, hold their nerve and keep trusting that they are good enough to finish the job.
Neville still backs Arsenal to get over the line
Despite the warning signs, Neville has not lost faith in Arsenal’s title chances.
He still believes they can become champions, even if the path now looks much harder than it did before the Bournemouth defeat. His view is that Arsenal may not cruise over the line, but they can still crawl there if they handle the next week the right way.
