Bayern Munich is nearing a surprising decision to appoint Vincent Kompany, currently the manager of Burnley, as their next coach, replacing Thomas Tuchel. This development was reported by various German and English news outlets, including Bild, Sky, and The Guardian, on Wednesday. Kompany, who is under contract with Burnley for another four years, has reportedly agreed in principle to take the helm at Bayern. The German club is now arranging a compensation package for Burnley to secure his release.
Bayern’s Coaching Carousel and Burnley’s Relegation
Burnley has been demoted from the Premier League after a single season in the English top division. Following a disappointing run behind Bayer Leverkusen, the eventual champions, Bayern Munich and Thomas Tuchel mutually decided to part ways in February. As Bayern continues their search for a new head coach, Vincent Kompany emerges as the latest candidate linked to the position. Several high-profile figures, including Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann, and Austria’s Ralf Rangnick, have reportedly declined Bayern’s overtures. Despite attempts to retain him after leading the team to a Champions League semi-final defeat against Real Madrid, Tuchel and Bayern could not agree on terms for his continuation.
Kompany’s Brief Premier League Stint with Burnley
Vincent Kompany became the manager of Burnley in 2022 and led them to the Premier League by winning the second division. Despite this achievement, he was unable to maintain their top-flight status, resulting in their relegation to 19th place in the following season.
