Brian Barry-Murphy said Cardiff City’s 1-1 draw away to Huddersfield Town was “a great point in the circumstances” after his side rescued the game deep into stoppage time. Yousef Salech struck in the 95th minute to cancel out Ryan Ledson’s first-half goal and earn the Bluebirds a dramatic late result.
Cardiff left it late but avoided defeat
For long periods, Cardiff looked set to leave the Accu Stadium empty-handed. Huddersfield had gone in front through Ledson in the opening half and held that lead until the closing moments, only for Salech to rescue a point right at the end. Barry-Murphy admitted his side were below their best, which made the late equaliser feel even more valuable.
Barry-Murphy pleased fans had something to celebrate
The Cardiff head coach said the result meant even more because of the large away support that travelled to watch the match. He accepted that his team were not at their highest level, but was glad they could still give their supporters a late moment of joy. That emotional finish, in his view, helped turn a frustrating night into an important one.
Promotion remains close but not yet confirmed
The draw means Cardiff still have work to do before promotion can be sealed. Their return to the Championship remains within touching distance, but the celebrations are on hold for now. Barry-Murphy framed that as part of the process, saying this stage of the season is valuable for a squad learning what promotion pressure really feels like.
He says the challenge itself is part of the growth
Barry-Murphy stressed that chasing promotion is supposed to be difficult and that his players need to experience every part of that journey. Rather than complaining about the tension, he suggested the team should embrace it, enjoy it and then try to finish the job in the next match. His focus remains fixed on the bigger objective, even if Cardiff could not complete it this time.
Lawlor injury adds concern
The night was not without a downside for Cardiff. Defender Dylan Lawlor had to come off in the 60th minute and Barry-Murphy later revealed the 20-year-old is still struggling with a toe problem picked up while away with Wales during the March international break. The manager said Lawlor was in significant discomfort and simply could not continue at the level required. Reports from the past week had already flagged that Cardiff were being stretched at centre-back because of Lawlor’s injury situation.
Cardiff still control their own path
Despite the frustration of missing the chance to edge even closer to promotion, Cardiff still remain in a strong position. The late equaliser may yet prove important, not just for the table but for morale. Barry-Murphy’s message afterwards was clear: his team are not over the line yet, but they are still moving in the right direction.
