Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics started strong with victories in the 50kg freestyle category. However, her hopes were dashed when she was disqualified for failing to meet the weight requirements on the second day of weigh-ins.
The United World Wrestling (UWW) rules are clear: any wrestler who does not make weight is automatically disqualified. Despite her earlier successes, Phogat faced the harsh reality of these rules, which left no room for exceptions.
CAS Upholds the Disqualification
Phogat appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing that she did not have enough time to complete her weight loss regimen. Nevertheless, CAS upheld the disqualification, stating that it is the athlete’s duty to adhere to the competition’s weight limits. While the CAS acknowledged the severity of the rule, referring to it as “draconian,” they deemed it necessary within the sport’s framework.
The Aftermath and Debate
With Phogat out of the competition, American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt claimed the gold medal in the 50kg category. The incident has sparked a broader debate on the fairness of such stringent regulations in sports, particularly when they result in significant consequences for the athletes involved.
