Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move from Liverpool to Real Madrid was meant to open a bold new chapter in his career, but the reality has been far more complicated. The former Anfield star has struggled to settle fully in Spain and is also finding himself pushed further away from the England picture.
What once looked like a dream switch has quickly turned into a testing period on and off the pitch. Injuries, selection setbacks and growing criticism have all combined to make this one of the toughest stretches of his career.
A move to Madrid has not brought the expected lift
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool with plenty of noise around his departure, especially after supporters reacted badly during his final months at the club. His arrival at Real Madrid was supposed to mark a fresh start, but things have not unfolded smoothly.
Since joining the Spanish side, he has faced repeated interruptions. Fitness problems have limited his rhythm, while tactical choices have also reduced his role. One of the latest setbacks came after he was reportedly left out because of a disciplinary issue linked to arriving late for training.
The team’s wider season has also added pressure. Real Madrid have already suffered several major disappointments and now appear to be relying heavily on the Champions League to rescue the campaign.
Coaching changes have added more uncertainty
Another factor shaping his situation is the change on the bench. Xabi Alonso was the coach linked with bringing him to Madrid, but Álvaro Arbeloa is now in charge and is believed to prefer other options at right back.
That shift has made Alexander-Arnold’s position even less secure. Although he recently came off the bench in the derby against Atlético and contributed with an assist for Vinicius Jr, it has not yet changed the overall picture around his place in the squad.
England door looks to be closing at the worst time
His club struggles are being matched by frustration with the national team. Alexander-Arnold has again been overlooked by Thomas Tuchel, extending a long run of absences from the England squad.
What made the omission more striking was that even after an injury opened up room in the squad, Tuchel chose another player rather than turning back to the Madrid defender. That has only increased doubts over whether he will be part of England’s plans for the World Cup.
At the moment, his chances of making the trip appear to be fading, which would be a major blow for a player who once looked certain to be central to England’s future.
The gap between ambition and reality has grown
Not long ago, Alexander-Arnold was speaking about huge personal goals and his desire to be remembered among the greatest players ever in his position. Right now, that vision feels much further away than it once did.
He is still only one strong run away from changing the conversation, but for the moment the story is very different. Instead of enjoying the high point of a bold career move, he is battling through a period filled with doubt, pressure and missed momentum.
