Gary Neville has raised serious concerns about Manchester United’s current squad, pinpointing five players he believes are not good enough to play under Ruben Amorim’s system. The United legend made these remarks after the club’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Manchester City, in which the team registered only two shots on target.
Neville’s Criticism of the Current Squad
In his post-match analysis, Neville did not hold back, saying the performance was “robotic” and calling for significant changes. He pointed out that Amorim, much like previous managers Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Erik ten Hag, had been forced to fall back on a low-block defense due to a lack of suitable players capable of implementing a high-energy, pressing game.
Five Players Who Need Replacing
According to Neville, Manchester United needs to sign at least five new players this summer. The players he singled out for criticism include:
- Rasmus Hojlund
- Alejandro Garnacho
- Joshua Zirkzee
- Diogo Dalot
- Patrick Dorgu
These players, according to Neville, are not up to the standard required for Amorim’s tactical approach, particularly in the forward and wing-back positions.
The Case for New Signings
Neville emphasized that United must serve Amorim with five new signings capable of executing his style of play. The current forward line, consisting of Hojlund, Garnacho, and Zirkzee, has only managed a total of 10 goals between them in 85 Premier League appearances this season.
Despite his criticism of certain players, Neville did praise Bruno Fernandes, noting he is “United’s real player of absolute quality.” However, the overall tone of his comments suggests that a substantial overhaul is needed for United to compete at the highest level under Amorim’s management.
