Martin Zubimendi has opened up about his decision to turn down a £51 million transfer to Liverpool last summer, opting instead to stay at Real Sociedad. The Spanish midfielder, who had helped his national team win Euro 2024, had verbally agreed to a move to Anfield, with Liverpool prepared to trigger his release clause. However, he changed his mind and decided to remain with Sociedad, leaving Liverpool disappointed.
Zubimendi’s Reflections on Staying at Real Sociedad
Reflecting on the decision, Zubimendi explained: “It wasn’t an easy time. I wanted to stay at La Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options. The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave – and it wasn’t the right time. I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision.”
Despite Liverpool’s displeasure over the change of heart, they chose not to reinforce their midfield and went on to dominate the Premier League under new manager Arne Slot, securing a record-equalling 20th league title.
Zubimendi’s Move to Arsenal
Zubimendi’s decision to stay with Real Sociedad was followed by a move to Arsenal a year later for £56 million. The Spaniard admitted that joining Arsenal represented a significant change, but one he had long desired: “It’s a different change for me. It’s the change I wanted. Since the first day I’ve been here, I’ve noticed the greatness of this club, and I’m adapting.”
Comments on Arsenal’s Progress and Liverpool’s Champions League Struggles
While discussing Arsenal’s future, Zubimendi made a comment that may rub Liverpool supporters the wrong way. He stated that Arsenal was the only team to truly threaten Paris Saint-Germain last season in the Champions League. Arsenal finished 10 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League and were defeated 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League semi-finals by PSG, who ultimately won the competition.
Zubimendi added: “The most important thing about this club is that they learn from previous seasons. The lessons they’ve learned from how last season ended will be key to getting even closer to this year’s targets. Football comes down to details, especially in the Champions League.”
