Harry Maguire has signed a new Manchester United contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford until 2027, with the club holding an option for a further year. The new deal comes after the defender accepted a wage reduction from his previous contract, which had been worth about £190,000 a week.
The 33 year old’s previous agreement had been due to expire this summer, so the extension removes uncertainty around his future and rewards a strong revival in form. Since Michael Carrick took charge in January, Maguire has become a regular starter again and has helped United improve significantly in the league.
Maguire calls United role “the ultimate honour”
After signing, Maguire said representing Manchester United remains “the ultimate honour” and described the responsibility of playing for the club as something that makes both him and his family proud. He also said he believes the squad has ambition and potential, and that better moments still lie ahead for the group.
That message underlined how much his position has changed over the past 18 months. There was a time when his future looked uncertain, but he has rebuilt his standing through persistence and improved performances.
A major turnaround in his United career
Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80 million, still a world record fee for a defender. He was quickly made captain, but later lost the armband and appeared to be drifting toward the exit.
Instead, he stayed and fought for his place. That decision now looks increasingly important, because United see his experience and leadership as valuable assets, especially with Casemiro expected to leave this summer. Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire’s mentality, resilience and professionalism after the extension was confirmed.
England recall has boosted his momentum
The contract renewal also follows a timely return to the England setup. Maguire featured in both March friendlies, which has strengthened his hopes of earning a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad later this year.
That international recall, combined with his regular role under Carrick, shows that Maguire is once again being viewed as a reliable high level defender rather than a player nearing the end of his United career.
Another contract could follow soon
Maguire may not be the only United player nearing a fresh agreement. Reports also indicate that Kobbie Mainoo is close to signing a long term extension that would better reflect his rise into the first team.
For Maguire, though, this new deal feels especially significant. It is not just an extension on paper. It is recognition of a comeback that has taken him from uncertainty to importance again at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
