Former South African pacer Dale Steyn has expressed strong support for Gautam Gambhir’s new role as India’s head coach. Steyn highlighted Gambhir’s aggression and strategic understanding of the game as crucial elements that will benefit the Indian team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Gambhir following Rahul Dravid’s departure after India clinched the T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought.
A Unique Indian Cricketer
Steyn reminisced about Gambhir’s unique approach on the field, noting that he was one of the few Indian players who would confront opponents aggressively. “I’m a big fan of Gautam Gambhir. I love his aggression. He’s one of the few Indians I ever played against who came back at you, and I like that,” Steyn said. He believes that Gambhir’s fierce attitude will be a valuable addition to the dressing room, especially for senior players like Virat Kohli.
The Need for Aggression in World Cricket
Steyn emphasized the importance of aggression in cricket, pointing out the growing camaraderie among players due to various leagues. “Not just in India, but in world cricket, we need guys who are a little bit more aggressive and play the game a little bit harder,” he noted. Steyn praised Gambhir for balancing on-field fierceness with off-field gentlemanly behavior, coupled with his street-smart cricketing brain.
Endorsements from Cricket Legends
Gambhir’s appointment has also received endorsements from other cricketing legends. Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis praised Gambhir’s cricket intelligence and aggressive playing style. “He’ll bring some fire and loves playing the game aggressively. I think he’ll bring that added touch, and the guys will certainly learn a lot from him,” Kallis remarked.
Former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi also recognized the significant opportunity Gambhir has. “I think it’s a big opportunity, and we need to see how he makes the most of it. I have seen his interviews, and he talks positively and is very straightforward,” Afridi commented.
Upcoming Tour of Sri Lanka
Gambhir will join the Indian team for their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, where they are set to play three T20 Internationals (T20Is) and three One Day Internationals (ODIs) starting on July 27. This tour will be an early test of Gambhir’s impact as head coach and his ability to lead the team to further success.
