Cucurella raises fresh doubts over Chelsea’s project after another turbulent season

Marc Cucurella has become one more senior Chelsea player to publicly question the club’s current direction. The Spanish defender said the decision to remove Enzo Maresca during the season damaged the team’s balance and made life harder for the squad.

His comments arrive at a sensitive moment for Chelsea, with frustration growing after heavy defeat in Europe and with more scrutiny falling on the club’s long term plan.

Cucurella says Maresca’s exit disrupted the team

According to Cucurella, the squad had built real understanding under Maresca and had reached a point where players knew exactly what was expected of them. He explained that this came from time, repetition and a shared structure that had developed over many months.

That is why the coaching change hit so hard. In his view, replacing the manager in the middle of the season broke momentum and removed a sense of stability that the team had only recently found.

He made clear that, if it had been his choice, he would not have changed managers at that point. He believes such a move would have made more sense after the campaign, when both players and a new coach could begin again with a full preseason.

He warns Chelsea need more than youth to fight for the biggest prizes

Cucurella also questioned whether Chelsea’s transfer strategy is enough to deliver major trophies. While he accepted that the club wants to build for the future, he suggested that relying too heavily on young signings can make it harder to compete immediately at the highest level.

Using the defeat to Paris Saint Germain as an example, he said Chelsea lacked the kind of experience needed in matches of that level. For him, the squad has a solid base, but not yet everything required to truly challenge for titles like the Premier League or the Champions League.

His view adds to growing noise from inside the squad

These remarks follow similar concerns recently voiced by Enzo Fernandez, who also said Maresca’s departure hurt the group. When two important first team players speak this openly, it naturally creates the impression that there is unease inside the dressing room.

The concern for Chelsea is not only about outside criticism from supporters or media. It is that some of the players expected to lead the project forward are beginning to question whether the current plan can match their ambitions.

Cucurella also left the door open to a future move

While on international duty, Cucurella admitted that a return to Spain would be difficult to ignore if the right opportunity arrived. He specifically said that an offer from Barcelona, the club where he came through the academy, would be something he would have to think about seriously.

He added that he is happy at Chelsea for now and that his family is settled, but the fact he did not shut the idea down entirely will only add more attention to his future.

Chelsea now face pressure on more than one front

Chelsea’s leadership has continued to defend its youth focused approach, but comments like these suggest not everyone inside the squad is fully convinced. That becomes even more important as some of the club’s main players move closer to the peak years of their careers and expect to compete for the biggest honours.

If Chelsea cannot offer Champions League football or show clear progress toward major trophies, doubts around the project may only get louder. Right now, Cucurella’s words have added another layer of pressure to a club already dealing with enough uncertainty.
