Arsenal Quiet on Deadline Day but Add Academy Prospects

Arsenal ended the January transfer window without adding to their first-team squad despite Mikel Arteta’s search for midfield cover following Mikel Merino’s foot injury. The Gunners explored late options but found no suitable player who could adapt immediately and impact the team.

Arteta explained the club’s approach: “We need to do everything possible to see if we have a player available. If not, we keep what we have. At this level, especially for four months, the player must adapt quickly and make a difference. That’s not easy.”

Rumours surfaced on deadline day linking Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali with a shock move to Arsenal to solve midfield issues. However, Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso firmly denied any contact. Speaking to Sky Italia, Riso said: “We never had any conversation with Arsenal. Newcastle were never going to let Tonali leave in January. There’s absolutely nothing into it. We didn’t even talk about it.”

Both clubs had previously cooled expectations, and the brief speculation quickly faded.

Late Academy Signings Announced

After the window closed, Arsenal confirmed two youth additions. Eighteen-year-old Evan Mooney joined from Scottish Premiership side St Mirren for an initial £400,000 fee, plus £400,000 in add-ons and an undisclosed sell-on clause. The forward is set to integrate into the academy setup.

Arsenal’s statement read: “Everyone at Arsenal would like to congratulate Evan and welcome him to the club.”

On deadline day itself, the Gunners secured Stoke City centre-half Jaden Dixon for close to £500,000. The 18-year-old right-sided defender, who can also play right-back, is a highly-rated talent who made his Championship debut last season. Arsenal beat off competition from other clubs to land him, valuing his versatility which aligns with Arteta’s preferences.

These moves focus on long-term development rather than immediate first-team help, as Arsenal continue their Premier League title push with the current squad.
